experience
Naviger, LLC
Dates:
June 2002 - Present
Position/Title: Architect/Senior Developer/Owner
Duties: From January 1994 to the present I have worked as a software development and architecture consultant as Naviger, LLC on a variety of technology project, focusing on .NET architecture, OOP, database design/modeling, SOA and development methodologies. Projects in 2005 include developing a strategic plan, physical and software architecture, team development, and budgeting for a web-based contingent employee management system using BizTalk 2004, and performing a process improvement audit for a financial services firm. Currently I am restructuring a business intelligence project for a large multinational firm in order to improve the quality of data, reduce the need and complexity of ongoing development efforts, and reduce the project timeline. The project pulls sales data from units in the U.S., Europe, Asia and Central America into a single reporting structure. The original project has an expected timeline of 24 months to bring the last site on board and we are on schedule to bring it down to 5 months.

The largest engagement was for one of the largest call center outsourcing firms in the world. Beginning in June 2002, I was initially hired for a six-month engagement to architect an internal web system to allow call-center agents and managers assess to employee performance data and functionality. I worked with the client to assess the current system’s capabilities and weaknesses and worked within tight budgetary and time constraints to architect a business and technical solution for an enterprise system that would scale to 55,000+ users. Application Architecture was developed using object-oriented techniques with Use Case Diagrams and UML. As the architect I also performed the roles of technology visionary, strategy consultant, software and data architect, technical lead and project manager. The project also pioneered the use of offshore developers within the firm. I worked with management to establish communication and quality control mechanisms to ensure success with the offshore resources. I was retained for subsequent phases. Typical tasks included:
  • Working with upper management to establish goals, criteria and strategy for success
  • Creating scope, development plan, defining cycles, milestones, phases, budgets
  • Defining the application architecture with Design Patterns
  • Defining business requirements, including running JAD sessions, working with business and technical Subject Matter Experts
  • Working with DBAs, Network Operations, etc., to ensure application compatibility, smooth implementation, and completeness in execution.
  • Researching technologies (platforms, data warehousing, workflow, business intelligence tools, database concepts)
  • Interviewing and recommending prospective technical local and offshore resources
  • Create project processes for both local and offshore development.
  • Create document and coding standards
  • Updating management on project status and on new technologies

Samsung Electronics America
Location:
Ridgefield Park, NJ
Dates: January 2000 – August 2000
Position/Title: Corporate Webmaster/Manager North American eBusiness
Duties: As Corporate Webmaster I was in charge of designing and developing the SamsungUSA.com website, which was launched July 2000. This site replaces several division-level North American sites to form a single site that enhanced Samsung’s US brand equity. I worked with various divisions including telephone, office products, consumer electronics and home appliances to create a coherent strategy for Samsung’s online presence. I then oversaw the development of the site, including software selection, negotiating with vendors, hiring staff, requirements gathering, managing the development teams, arranging hardware and software infrastructure and mediating disputes. In addition, I oversaw the development of two SAP-linked B2B eCommerce websites to promote reseller relations and business transactions, including supply-chain management, within two Samsung North America business units.

Most development utilized resources in Korea, where I lived for two months while managing an international team including internal developers, outside graphic professionals and PriceWaterhouseCoopers consultants. My U.S.-based responsibilities included working with business personnel to establish needs and requirements, budgeting, technology selection, signing and reviewing contracts, managing staff, developing strategy and setting policies. Integral to the development effort was coordinating the interests and requirements of Samsung Electronics’ North American operations, including those in Canada. I worked with Samsung Data Systems in developing their first North American hosting presence in New Jersey and developing backup and failover procedures.

Going beyond my job requirements, I spearheaded an international effort to share resources between the regional webmasters (including Europe, Russia, Singapore and South Korea). This effort included technology cooperation, content management and knowledge sharing, as well as formulating a consistent global presence through the implementation of global design guidelines.

Broadcast Music Incorporated
Location:
New York, NY
Dates: June 1999 - January 2000
Position/Title: Webmaster/Director, Online Communications
Duties: As BMI Webmaster, I oversaw the management and redesign of the award-winning bmi.com website. I was intimately involved with the development and design process, as well as negotiating and interacting with internal resources (IT and business units) and external resources (design firms, content providers, etc.), managing staff, budgeting and setting strategy. As part of the redesign, I designed and developed a content management system (CMS) based on Microsoft Outlook/Exchange, Microsoft Visual Basic and relational database. This CMS allowed for easier and timelier update of content on a scheduled basis. The benefits of the new site included easier navigation and more direct access to content, as well as the creation of new content areas to promote the efforts of the company.

Location: Nashville, TN, New York, NY
Dates: April 1996 – January 1999
Position/Title: Senior Programmer/Project Leader
Duties: Initially hired as an independent consultant, I was involved in developing BMI's web infrastructure. I worked on a number of Internet and Intranet prototypes, including the architecting of multithreaded web spidering technology and a prototype for an international queue sheet search and display application. I worked primarily with Microsoft server technology (IIS/ASP, Microsoft Message Queue, Microsoft Transaction Server) using C++, JavaScript, VBScript, Visual Basic and Web technologies (HTML, XML, etc.) using Oracle for database needs. I designed and developed the company's first B2B application that allowed television stations to report music usage via the Internet. This system utilized Microsoft Access 2.0, FTP and XML. I transferred to the company's New York office in January 1999 to manage the application development team in that office.
